Mauricio Escalon was born into a family that began producing coffee in the third quarter of the 1800s. In the 1870s, his grandfather , Pedro Jose Escalon , started the family's coffee story by establishing a coffee plantation in Santa Ana. He later founded El Molino (The Mill), the first industrial coffee processing facility in El Salvador.
At the end of the 20th century, the family business went through a difficult period due to the coffee price crisis. However, with Mauricio's contributions, the company was revived. In 2003, they adopted a new strategy by entering the specialty coffee sector with the name Cafescal . The name Cafescal means "Cafes Escalon Calderon"; Calderon is Mauricio's mother's surname.
Today, the family business has 10 farms and 2 coffee processing plants . As managing director of Cafescal specialty coffee export company , Mauricio is responsible for the management and administration of agricultural processes. An architect, Mauricio also has experience in the construction sector, but his passion for coffee brought him back to the family business.
Finca Las Delicias farm has been producing coffee since the 1950s and has been managed by Cafescal since 2014. The farm is 37 hectares in size and the coffees are grown under the shade of Inga and cypress trees .
Las Delicias coffees were among the winning lots in the Cup of Excellence awards in 2003, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
