Ziwa Farm is a family-run farm in Ruthagati, a high-elevation area of Nyeri, Kenya. It was founded in 2019 by Esther Kariuki to create a safe and supportive home for her daughter Shantelle, who has Down syndrome. Alongside specialty coffee production, Ziwa’s work centers on inclusion, empowerment and community support.
The farm is home to 5,500 SL28, Batian and Ruiru 11 coffee trees, grown alongside macadamia and native trees. With 25 beehives, the farm places a strong emphasis on protecting biodiversity. Its coffee is cultivated using sustainable practices, including organic fertilization, manual weeding and selective harvesting. Hand-picked between October and December, the coffee is slowly sun-dried on raised beds.
Ziwa Farm also contributes to regional development by training local producers, partnering with schools and supporting women’s employment.
